Capturing a moment of a Bhutanese legacy

Design fit for a king

To celebrate the 60th birthday of Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the 4th king of Bhutan, his son and current ruler Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck asked VBAT to design an extraordinary commemorative whiskey. Called Prophecy, the

whiskey was meant to capture the essence of the 4th king’s reign. In all, some 3,000 bottles would be created, for the 4th king, visiting dignitaries and the Bhutanese Royal Family.

A Bhutanese legacy

For such a prestigious assignment, VBAT turned to Bhutanese folklore for inspiration. The name Prophecy directly references the so-called Raven Prophecy that took

place In Bhutan three hundred years ago. According to this prophecy, the 4th king of Bhutan would bring happiness and prosperity to the independent Himalayan state.

Handcrafted precision

The bottle’s shape was inspired by the Royal Raven Crown, the raven crest worn by all kings of Bhutan. Realising the shape required hand-blowing each bottle separately in a specially designed oval mold. The hand engraving around the

bottle’s belly pictured the country’s four deities, and the raven returned prominently on the bottle’s neck. Even the volume of whisky was symbolically charged – 60 centiliters, one centilitre for each year of the 4th king’s reign.
