Truly tadcaster

Established in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire in 1847, the UK’s No.1 keg ale is named after its favourite son. The original John Smith began his drinking empire when he started brewing his legendary ale for the town’s thirsty mill workers and factory hands, some things never change. A long established market leader, John Smith’s traditional British appearance required an update to stay in touch with today and to ensure it’s relevance for tomorrow. VBAT were briefed to refresh the brand’s identity and packaging with the iconic magnet symbol, symbolizing strength and attractiveness, at it’s core.

John Smith’s previous industrial look and feel has now been subtly modernized with a new crafted wordmark, more elegant lines and an iconic family of line extensions. Our work shows how this quintessential ale and British favourite can be successfully rebranded into a contemporary classic. The redesign has helped a new generation to discover John Smith’s and helped the brand to move away from their old reputation of being a drink purely for older men, whilst remaining true to their heritage and unique character.
